Away match versus North Star @ Nescot

1 - 3 W

by Matt R

After what felt like an eternity, Ewell Vets finally picked up their long awaited first three-point haul (if there was a league table involved) on Sunday with a valiant 3-1 display against North Star.

In an opening first half an hour that was scarcely even one for the purists, the hosts rode their luck when a North Star forward nodded a free header wide while local neighbours could count themselves fortunate to have all their windows intact after Sean sent two crowdfinders somewhat off target.

However, Ewell led through Little Rich just before the break when he scampered in on a loose ball in the box to finish coolly past the keeper.

That lead remained intact until the break, only for the sinking feeling to return when the visitors levelled.

With the game wide open, Bursnie's plucky Vets marauded forward in search of that elusive win - taking the occasional risk at the back now and again just to keep life interesting.

Presented with the chance to restore Ewell's lead, Ben made the bold choice of kicking for touch three pitches down rather than slotting home, thereby giving North Star a sniff of a chance still.

Academy graduate Matt/diminutive playmaker Rich (definitely the former) made amends however when he/they found the target from the edge of the area via the latter's bonce - sparking rarely-seen, wild celebrations on the touchline.

Remaining solid at the back and swift on the break - while employing some dark arts in the corner to kill time - Ewell ended the contest on top.

Matt wrapped up the W with a curled finish reminiscent of a young James Ward-Prowse, prompting the referee to intervene, call time and put North Star out of their misery.

This match report will continue to contain live updates as and when Ben's strike returns into the earth's gravitational pull.
